It is not known why the Rolling family moved to King Township from Oro. They may have come to King Township because it
had cheap land that was believed to be excellent for agriculture. The township was also experiencing a population boom. It may also have been because King Township was settled by Quakers from Vermont and Pennsylvania, people who were known to condemn slavery and aided in the underground railway. Benjamin Drew, a Quaker abolitionist stated “I look upon slavery as a disgrace, and as breaking the laws of God: that no man can keep the laws of God and hold to slavery.” The Quakers had a strong influence on the life and development of King Township.
